Materials in the UK
Within the brief and specifications it states 'Ideally we would like to see designers specify UK manufacture as well as sustainably and locally sourced materials'.
As a result I have now begun to investigate materials that are grown and manufactured within the UK.
From these statistics it is clear that softwood is much more available in the UK. Softwoods such as Spruce, Pine and Larch are mainly exported from the country. Perhaps I can investigate whether these materials will be suitable for my products. In regards to the hardwoods Oak, Birch, and Beech although less is exported from the UK these types of wood are also options.
Why does the brief want them to be locally sourced?
It is clear that the church's intentions when writing this brief was to generate money for the UK's economy and aid development in local companies and manufactures businesses. But these need to be affordable as well. If I was going to mass produce the chair then I would have to think about these things, but obviously I need to stick to the specifications thus it is vital to use the materials it states.
In terms of sustainability again if the product was being mass product in a real context then I would also need to find a company and manufacturer that considers sustainability issues within their mission statements for example not exploiting workers, not creating a huge impact on the local people when sourcing their materials, and also companies that take into account the impact it they have on the environment and how the company helps to avoid such an impact.
